What happens to my number if I cancel?
Short answer
You keep it until the end of the period you've already paid for. After that it goes back to the carrier and can't be recovered.
Cancelling stops the next charge. It doesn't cut you off early: your number, aliases, cards and password manager all keep working until the paid period ends.
Once the period ends, the number is released. If you come back later you'll get a new one, so before your plan runs out, move any account that matters, like your bank or your email recovery, to a number you'll keep.
Deleting your account is different. It cancels straight away and releases the number immediately.
