What a second phone number is
A second phone number is an additional number that reaches you without a second handset or a second SIM card. You give it out instead of your real number, and messages sent to it arrive in an inbox only you can see.
People reach for one at a specific moment. A dating match asks for your number. A buyer on a marketplace wants to text about a listing. A signup form demands a mobile before it will let you through. In each case the number does one job, and once that job is done you would rather it was not attached to you forever.

What non-VOIP means
VOIP numbers route calls and texts over the internet rather than over a mobile carrier network. That makes them cheap to issue in bulk, and it makes them easy for a platform to identify. Which platforms refuse VOIP numbers
